COURSE INTRODUCTION
Accelerated population ageing experienced in the last few decades is an exceptional phenomenon which was not known earlier. This may be due to various factors like sharp decline in the crude death rate and crude birth rate and improved quality of life due to advances in medicine and technology. As per the 1991 census, the population of the older persons in India was 57 million as compared with 20 million in 1951. There has been a sharp increase in the number of older persons between 1991 and 2001 and it has been projected that by the year 2050, the number of older people would rise to about 324 million. The current statistics for the older people in India gives a prelude to a new set of medical, social, and economic problems that could arise if a timely initiative in this direction is not taken by the program managers and policy makers.
In India, the older people suffer from dual medical problems, i.e., both communicable as well as non-communicable diseases. This is further compounded by impairment of special sensory functions like vision, hearing etc. A decline in immunity as well as age related physiologic changes leads to an increased burden of communicable diseases in the older population. The prevalence of tuberculosis is higher among the older population than younger individuals. It is shown that among the population over 60 years of age, 10% suffer from impaired physical mobility and 10% are hospitalized at any given time, both proportions rising with increasing age. In the population over 70 years of age, more than 50% suffer from one or more chronic conditions. Older people are highly prone to mental morbidities due to ageing of the brain, problems associated with physical health, cerebral pathology, socio-economic factors such as breakdown of the family support systems, and decrease in economic independence.
Ensuring good quality geriatric health care services at the primary level would greatly help in improving the utilization rates of the available health services. Health care services should be based on the felt needs of the older population. Hence, Centre for Gerontological Studies, KUHS is conducting Certificate program in Healthy Ageing & Geriatric Care– (CHAGC) which was intended earlier for the faculty of the affiliated institutions of KUHS and now open for the general public who have an intense desire to acquire knowledge on Healthy Ageing for various reasons. This, the Centre envisages, will help in creating a better equipped society in handling the ever increasing concerns associated with ageing in the society
